Ezechiel Salomon Cohen, alias: Jechezkel Zalman Cohen, birth ± 1670 Amsterdam, died 21 Apr 1744 Arnhem, Buried at Muiderberg: Jechezkel Kohen died 9 Ijar 5504 in Arnhem, son of Salomon Eljakum Cohen and Egla Jacob Norden Ezechiel came from Amsterdam to Amersfoort in 1690. He planted, processed and traded tobacco. In 1704 he was granted civil rights in Amersfoort, with his wife and children: Stadsarchief Amersfoort inv. nr. 1847, Burgerrechtverlening Ezechiel Cohen - geaccordeert, 5 mei 1704 - wonende binnen dese stad. Bijzonderheden joods, met Marretje Cohen (zijn vrouw) en hun kinderen met namen Philip, Jacob, Isaacq, Jonas, Lev i en Godschalck, soonen en Veronica, dochter. He was a man of importance in Amersfoort and the tobacco trade, when his son Godert applied for civil rights in Nijmegen and the opportunity to trade tobacco there, the authorities of Amersfoort sent a letter of recommendation, In 1726/27 he was one of the founders of the synagogue in Amersfoort, with Abraham van Minden, Adolph Abarahams, Abraham Levi, Cosmanus Gomperts and Abraham Italiaander Benjamins (all of them Parnassijn, Source: Transportregisters in het oud recht erlijk archief, Amersfoort). On his grave the title Morenoe. Ezechiel owned several properties in Amersfoort. In 1718 he bought a large house (which is now Muurhuizen 101-107), with huge attics suitable for the drying of tobacco, and large cellars for storage. He moved back to Amsterdam in 1737 where his wi fe died later that year. He sold the large house to his son Samuel in 1742. He also sold a warehouse in Amersfoort and 6 seats in the synagogue in Amsterdam. (Book: Amersfoortse Muurhuizen by Sandra Siemers-den Dulk, Uitgeverij Toth, Bussum) He may have moved to Amsterdam a bit earlier: he withdrew from the company he had with his son Samuel abt 1733, evidence for his return to Amsterdam: he stopped being an outside member of the Amsterdam Hoogduitsche Gemeente and starts paying fo r the full membership again (Geschiedenis van de familie Cohen by David Ezechiel Cohen, 1932, unpublished). He died 21 Apr 1744 in Arnhem, at the house of his son Jacob, and was buried at Muiderberg. After his death his properties were divided amongst his heirs: Philip -, Jacob -, Ysak -, Jonas -, Godert -. Samuel -, Vrouwtje -, Caatje -, Eva -, and the children of Judith Cohen (Boedelscheiding 1746 Esegiel Cohen, widower of Meerle Cohen, Arch ief Eemland). Levi and Judith had died earlier. 1) Jacob Ezechiel Cohen, birth ± 1692 Amersfoort, died 19 Sep 1763 Arnhem, Buried at Muiderberg; J'okeb Jechiel kohen amesfort. morenoe died 12 Tishre 5524 in the city of Arnhem. D.E. Cohen: Geschiedenis van de familie Cohen: Being an important tobacco merchant Jacob was allowed to take residence in Arnhem in 1718,. Being Jewish he had to pay a large sum of money as security, and wasn't granted poorterschap then (full civil rights). Later he also was the lease-holde r of the Bank van Lening (municipal pawnshop). He was one of the founders of the Ashkenazi community in Arnhem, services were held in his house, for some time in another building he rented, and after his death in the house of his son Salomon. Emanuel died childless. Lea left 6 children with Jacob Ezechiel Cohen: Rachel widow of Benjamin Italiaander Mordechaijs, now intending to marry Michiel Samuels, Salomon, Eva married to Benjamin Cohen, Rebecca married to Moses Bock, Malca and Emanuel. Impost Muiderberg burial 18 Jan 1761 3 gld Took residence as a tobacco merchant in Arnhem abt 1719 and later moved to Amsterdam, before 1726. In 1736: parnassijn, involved in purchasing grounds in Muiderberg to extend the cemetery. (D.E Cohen, Geschiedenis van de familie Cohen) 16 Jan 1727 Notaris P. Silvius, Utrecht: documents mentioning Philip Cohen as merchant in Amsterdam. He had a company with his sons Jacob, Salomon and Emanuel. On 10 June 1748 Jacob, living in Amersfoort makes a request, also on behalf of his brother Emanuel (Archief Amersfoort, Notaris v Brinckestein): In accordance with the contract 4 Jan 173 9 of the brothers Cohen with their father the company has been established before Notary Jan Barels; Jacobs share would be 1/3 of the profit and 1/3 in damages. Until 20 Jun 1743 all went according to the rules, after that the company faile d to do so, which is why Jacob requests that no payments shall be done without his knowledge or permission. Cohen, Geschiedenis van de familie Cohen: Philip was married to Mietje (Merla) daughter of Andries Levie Hamburg (died 17 Teveth 1678). Questionable: Mietje would have been a lot older than Philip. When son Jacob married in Amersfoort she was named Meerle Snapperts. When her husband died her name is recorded as Snappe and Snapper. |

Population register Nijkerk 1749 (Archief Nijkerk): Izaak Coheen, factoor, wife, 2 children 5-10, 1 child 10-15, 1 child >15 (those <5 were not counted), owner of three houses. Married 16 Jun 1726 Amsterdam to: Rebecca Alexander van Embden, birth 1706 Amsterdam, died before 1763 Nijkerk?, daughter of Alexander Joseph van Embden and Marianna Abraham Italiaander On 8 Nov 1762 Ester Italiaander (also known as Ester Levij Vittoria), second child of Abraham Italiaander (Levij Vittoria) and Gracia Campos, died unmarried, intestate. There had been a testament in which she and her brother Joseph had left everyt hing to each other, but Joseph had since died. A kind of family-tree was made on behalf of the heirs, before Notary Geniets (13582/111, on 12 feb 1763). The part concerning the van Embdens: Branch 8 Mariana, daughter of Abraham Italiaander (Levij Vittoria) and Rebecca Hammelburg, died long ago. She had been married to Alexander van Embden, they had 8 children: Hartog, Abraham, Eliaser, Joseph, Mordochaij, Rachel, Benjamin and Rebecca . The first six are still alive, the last two have died. Rachel is the widow of Moses Asser, Benjamin had 4 children with Helena van Rees: Mariana who is married to Calmer Wolff, Jochem, Alexander and Mindele, all living. Rebecca, long dead, has been married to Isaac Ezechiel Cohen. They had 5 children: Mariana, Merla, Alexander, Mindele and Ezechiel. Mariana married to Joseph Salomon Cohen, Merla to Abraham Eleaser Voorsanger, Mindele unmarried adult. The heirs gave power of attorney to Isaac Italiaander Mordechaijs, Mordechai van Embden, Jacobus Benedictus, and Meijer Abraham Sadok (all related). The minors among the heirs, Jochem, Alexander and Mindele van Embden (both parents had died), an d Ezechiel Isaac Cohen (his mother had died), would be represented by a suppoost of the Weeskamer (Orphan Board). Possibly more facts are described in the documents of the Weeskamer, but those of that period are badly damaged, and not available fo r public viewing. |

8) Judith Ezechiel Cohen, birth after 1704 Amersfoort, Not yet born when the family got civil rights in Amersfoort in 1704, died 1739 Amsterdam, Muiderberg cemetery: wife of Anshil Hamburger died on 12 Aw 5499 D.E. Cohen, in his Geschiedenis van de familie Cohen states Judith and Asser had three daughters: Vrouwtje, Caatje and Eva. He refers to the "boedelscheiding" 1746 after her fathers death. The names were those of her sisters. 9) Samuel Ezechiel Cohen, birth after 1704 Amersfoort, Not yet born when the family got civil rights in Amersfoort in 1704, died 3 May 1775 Amsterdam?, Burials in Amersfoort: Sjmoe'eel died 27 Apr 1778. Son of Jechezkel, rabbi. He does not appear in the "Eemlandse klapper 28" which includes the deaths of Jews in Amersfoort between 1759 and 1811 De Geschiedenis van de familie Cohen, D.E. Cohen: Marriage conditions 8 Dec 1729, notaris van Loon, between Ezechiel Cohen (grooms father) and Roosje Arons (brides mother): groom will bring in 2500 gld cash, the couple will live for two years with Ezechiel, Samuel would for the first four year s with his fathers company get one third and after that one half of the profits. The bride would bring in 4000 gld. When Ezechiel withdrew from his business in 1737 Samuel stayed in the house and went into business with his brother Jonas. The part nership was dissolved in 1741. After he sold the house to Jonas' son Benjamin he seems to have kept on living in a few rooms of the house. He died 3 Ijar 1775 and was buried in Amersfoort. The author mentions five children: Maria (probably Marianne), Rachel, Ezechiel, Salomon and Aron. Of Maria and Rachel he knew no details. Amersfoortse Muurhuizen, Sandra Riemers den Dulk: Samuel bought the large house in the Muurhuizen from his father in 1742 , and sold it to his nephew Benjamin Jonas Cohen in april 1753, stipulating that, if Benjamin would rent it out before May 1753, Samuel and Hanna could still have the us e of one or two rooms, He later moved to Amsterdam where he died 3 May 1775, though he was buried in Amersfoort. Benjamin had his pawnshop/bank in the house before he rented it out to someone else in 1779. 16 Feb 1764 burial Muiderberg of a daughter of Samuel Ezechiel Kohen from Amsterdam (impost on burials). "His Majesty the King of Denmark, under the title of Prince of Travendahl, honoured this city with his residence, followed by a numerous and brilliant retinue, from whence he proceeded yesterday to the Hague. Amongst the most remarkable things wor thy his Royal attention, his Majesty was pleased to visit the well known diamond fabric of Mr. Hartog Isaac Levy Shabracq, a great jeweller at this place, where his Majesty entertained himself about one hour, strictly examining the several branche s of the business, and the different process through which the diamond goes before it is brought to its brghtness; And after taking some refreshments, his Majesty and his retinue departed, expressing themselves greatly satisfied with what they ha d seen." Notary Dominicus Geniets: 12 April 1769: Hartog Isaac Levie grants power of attorney to his son Ezechiel. 28 June 1769 Contract between Moses Philip on the one side, and Hartog Isaac Levie and Ezechiel Schabracq on the other, to form a Trading Company in Diamonds, both rough and polished, the cutting, polishing and cleaving of the same, and all els e involved. Moses Philip probably the father of Levij Mozes Philips, who had been Hartogs businesspartner for many years. In Hartogs testament (Geniets, 1760) Levij Moses Philips and Jacob Mozes Philip were appointed executors of his will and guar dians of his minor children, but Levij died before Hartog. |
11) Eva Ezechiel Cohen, birth ± 1716 Amersfoort, Not yet born when the family got civil rights in Amersfoort in 1704. Her maternal grandmother died in 1716, she was probably named after her.,, died ± 1772 Metz? D.E. Cohen, in his Geschiedenis van de familie Cohen mentions she married her brother in law Moses Joseph de Jong after her first husband died. No further details. As children with Meijer Joseph he only lists Ezechiel, Izak, Pierette and Lion . It is very clear in the testament of.Meijers parents (Notaris Geniets, 1758, act 92) that they only had one son, Meijer, and one daughter, Pes. When daughter Sara married in Nov 1770 and son Ezechiel in Sep 1771 Eva was living in Metz. On 16 Nov 1769 an Eve Cahen, widow of Mayer Rintel from Amsterdam married Jacob Elie Terquem. However, in the notarial acts between 1764 and 1772 concerning her children receiving their fathers inheritance, Eva is described as "Eva Ezechiel Cohen formerly widow of Meijer Joseph de Jonge, now wife of MOSES JOSEPH". On 11 Nov 1772 a not e in the margin of one of those documents states that she had died by then. Married 19 Jul 1737 Amsterdam to: Meijer Joseph de Jonge, alias: Rintel, died 1 Jul 1760 Amsterdam, son of Joseph Isaac de Jonge and Edel Joseph Levie 20 Feb 1758, Notaris Geniets 13552/88: After working together for many years as Joseph Isaac de Jonge & Son, Joseph and his son Meijer now make a contract to form a Company under the same name, for divers merchandise. The balance shows that Meijer s interest in the firm is 50000.- guilders. Office, Cash and Books will be kept in Josephs house, every year in February or March the balance of the account will be made up. If Joseph dies before Meijer the whole firm will become Meijers property , nothing excluded. On wednesday the 25th of June 1760 at half past eleven in the morning, Meijer Joseph de Jonge, at his home at the BinnenAmstel between Kerkstraat and Nieuwe Princengragt, his body unwell, but his mind, memory and speech are sound, has his Will dr awn up by Notaris Geniets and witnesses (13566/443), and before that an agreement between him and his son Isack (13566/442). The agreement: starting on the day of Meijers death a Company will be set up between his widow Eva Ezechiel Cohen and his son on the following conditions: The company will be run by Isack. As long as 10 or more children are under age and unmarried the profits will be equally shared between Eva and Isack. After that, for every child that dies, marries or comes of age, 10% of Eva's half of the profit s will be deducted and go to Isack. The company will exist as long as there are minor unmarried children. If Eva remarries while one or more of the children are minors, she will not receive any profits anymore, they will be used by the guardians on behalf of the minors. Finally, if Edel Joseph Levij, mother of Joseph Isaac and grandmother of Isack Meijers decides not to go and live with Eva or Isack, she will receive 8 guilders weekly, as long as she lives, out of the Company's profits. In his Will he bequeaths 50 guilders to the Jewish school named Talmuth Torah Echayn, and 50 guilders to the one named Magadele Setomom. To his mother, Edel Joseph Levij, widow of Joseph Isaac de Jongh, during her whole life, 8 gld each week. Out of the very first money that will be available from his estate 10000 gld shall be paid to his wife, to compensate what she had brought in at the marriage. Also he bequeaths to her all her personal clothes, jewels, gold and silverwork, and unti ll she remarries, otherwise during her whole life, the use of all furniture, household goods and silverware. His children are his sole heirs, all of them, in equal shares. The money or goods that was received by those who married before his death will be deducted from their share. After the seven days of mourning, and also 4 weeks after his death, his wife and son Isack shall distribute to the poor as much as his name Mayer means in Jewish numbers: 251 schellingen. Finally, as executors of his will, his burial, administrator of his estate and guardians of his minor children he appoints wife, his son Isack and Mr Thomas van Zon, former vice-president Schepen of this City and administrator of the Amsterdam Cha mber of the Dutch East-Indies Company. |
