He was a commission cattle dealer, and also operated a liquor store.

They lived in Oss, Molenstraat 40 untill 1926 (?), at which time they moved to live with their daughter Elisabeth and son-in-law Emanuel in Zutphen.
He had a retail business dealing in drygoods, and was an antique collector, starting by bartering in his early years.
The building at the Molenstraat in Oss had two residences attached, one for himself, and one for his son Isidor. This building was the original office building of the Unilever concern. During WW2 the building was 'sold' to an accountant de Bruin , and it took close to ten years for the deed to be restored to the 'undivided estate of Jozef van Dijk'. When this was finally accomplished, the property was sold.

'De Toren', a weekly 'Bommelerwaard" dated 21 May 1987 wrote in an article by P.C.van Wijk about an advertisement of 25 Sep 1942 in 'de Bommelerwaard' about the liquidation of the retail stores of A.A.Hes and B.van Dijk.
