Joseph Hartog, birth 1652 Marren, died ± 1703 Joseph had first married Abigail Hartog (father "de Pool" in 1685, then her sister Duifje in 1693. His place of origin according to the subsequent marriages: Marren, Vienna and Furth. Maybe born in one of these places and had lived in the other. D.E. Cohen, in the Geschiedenis van de familie Cohen writes: Joseph Hartogh van Fext, and wonders if that is in Tunis! Isaac Salomon Cohen and Wolff Goldsmit were the guardians of Josephs children from all three marriages. Both were the witnesses at the marriage of Moses b 1687, Rachel b 1689, Hijman b 1690, and Abigael b 1693 (Stadsarchief, ondertrouwregisters) . Married 15 Apr 1696 Amsterdam to: Ester Salomon Cohen, birth 1671 Amsterdam, died ± 30 Aug 1753 Amsterdam, Muiderberg cemetery: on 29 Aw 5513 - the old wife of Levi Karfeld. In the impost-register the name is written as Karpel, buried pro deo (30 Aug 1753). 1st marriage 2nd marriage 3rd marriage, daughter of Salomon Eljakum Cohen and Egla Jacob Norden From "De geschiedenis van de familie Cohen" by D.E. Cohen: - Guardians of her three children (one of them named Jacob) with Hendrik: their grandfather Salomon Cohen, their uncle Marcus Levie Drukker (his wife was Hendriks sister) and the family-friend Joseph van Embden. 17 Jan 1714 Ester hands over 500 gl d to her (still minor) son from her first marriage, Jacob Hendrik, his share of his fathers inheritance. Ester was then about to marry Levi Karpel (from Prague). - The children from her second marriage were Rachel, Abigael, Isak, Hartogh, Philip and Judith. Their share in their fathers inheritance was 1000 gld each. Cohen writes that he didn't know anyting about the oldest four; Philip went to Suriname. Judith and her husband Jacob Hartog received her part of the inheritance from Levi Karpel and Levi Fles on 13 December 1729. (Rachel and Abigael turn out to be children of Joseph Hartog from his earlier marriages, I don't know about Isak). |
1) Sara Joseph, birth 1697 Amsterdam Was not mentioned by D.E. Cohen in his book, the marriage is the only source Married 12 Jun 1712 Amsterdam to: Hijman Levie, birth 1689 Amsterdam |
2) Philip Joseph From "De geschiedenis van de familie Cohen" by D.E. Cohen: It seems Philip wanted to marry in Suriname against his mother's will. He was 21 by then. Ester and her new husband Levi Karpel passed a notarial act with notary Boots to that purpose, giv ing power of attorney to two other guardians, Juda Abrahams and Jacob Meyers in Suriname to do whatever possible to stop that marriage. Cohen didn't say when this happened, and I haven't found this act (yet). 6 May 1739 appeared before Notary Daniel vd Brink: Ester Salomon Cohen earlier widow of Joseph Hartog, now wife of Levij Karpel, also Levij Karpel and Levij Fles, who declared and affirmed: That Philip Joseph, son of the first person present, who in the year 1719 left from here to Zuriname and is now living there, has always in this country behaved in a quiet and decent manner, without the least discredit, That in the year 1719 after requesting and receiving her permission, he had left of his own accord to seek his fortune, without being forced by them or forcibly sent there for bad behaviour, For reasons of knowledge at the time because the 2nd and 3rd persons present had been his guardians and because it is the truth they are willing to confirm this by oath. To this was added a declaration by Mayors and Governors of the City that the three had declared the above to be true by Oath of the Jewish Nation, and had persisted it was the truth to the Secretary. Signed and sealed by L. Witsen, 13 May 1739 (A 'dam Archives 5075 10314/218). In 1745 he was executor of the will of his half-brother Godschalk Levij, also in Suriname. Registrations of births and deaths of Ashkenazi Jews in Suriname have survived from 1773. Civil marriages from 1736, but many marriage documents are illegible. Some online family trees give him the surname Heilbron, but it makes little sense. There was a Joseph Philip Heilbron who died in Paramaribo 5 Nov 1801, but also a Joseph Philip Joseph in 1799. Married 23 Jan 1736 Paramaribo, Suriname to: Judith Wolff Salomons, died 8 May 1782 Paramaribo, Suriname, Widow Philip Joseph named Judit Wolf |

4) Judith Joseph, birth ± 1703 Amsterdam, Her age at marriage 23 years means she would have been born in 1705/6. Her father had died early 1703, so she would have been at least 26 at the time of her marriage. Maybe she adjusted her age to the grooms'., died ± 14 Mar 1768 Amsterdam
