Philip Joseph, son of Joseph Hartog and Ester Salomon Cohen From "De geschiedenis van de familie Cohen" by D.E. Cohen: It seems Philip wanted to marry in Suriname against his mother's will. He was 21 by then. Ester and her new husband Levi Karpel passed a notarial act with notary Boots to that purpose, giv ing power of attorney to two other guardians, Juda Abrahams and Jacob Meyers in Suriname to do whatever possible to stop that marriage. Cohen didn't say when this happened, and I haven't found this act (yet). 6 May 1739 appeared before Notary Daniel vd Brink: Ester Salomon Cohen earlier widow of Joseph Hartog, now wife of Levij Karpel, also Levij Karpel and Levij Fles, who declared and affirmed: That Philip Joseph, son of the first person present, who in the year 1719 left from here to Zuriname and is now living there, has always in this country behaved in a quiet and decent manner, without the least discredit, That in the year 1719 after requesting and receiving her permission, he had left of his own accord to seek his fortune, without being forced by them or forcibly sent there for bad behaviour, For reasons of knowledge at the time because the 2nd and 3rd persons present had been his guardians and because it is the truth they are willing to confirm this by oath. To this was added a declaration by Mayors and Governors of the City that the three had declared the above to be true by Oath of the Jewish Nation, and had persisted it was the truth to the Secretary. Signed and sealed by L. Witsen, 13 May 1739 (A 'dam Archives 5075 10314/218). In 1745 he was executor of the will of his half-brother Godschalk Levij, also in Suriname. Registrations of births and deaths of Ashkenazi Jews in Suriname have survived from 1773. Civil marriages from 1736, but many marriage documents are illegible. Some online family trees give him the surname Heilbron, but it makes little sense. There was a Joseph Philip Heilbron who died in Paramaribo 5 Nov 1801, but also a Joseph Philip Joseph in 1799.
