Salomon Josepf DE GROOT, birth ± 1758 Buczacz Galicia, died 14 Sep 1835 Wierden, son of David SALOMON and Hendrina LEVY After Austria's annexation of Eastern Galicia (first division of Poland, 1772) deteriorated very much the economic situation of the Jews in that area. See literature. Many Jews emigrated, mostly to the west, among them Salomon Joseph. Nothin g is known about eventual brothers and/or sisters, neither when he left, which way he travelled abd when he reached Holland and finally settled in the small farmer's community Wierden, within regional community Kedingen.A few Jews arrived befor e him, bur there was no kehilla organization. IN 1812 he adopted De Groot as family-name. The related Registers of Kedingen have been lost, with a complete list of his wife and children.Maybe he and Martha had more than 5. There is no Jewish cemetry in Wierden. Salomon Joseph (Jewish name: Yehoshua a.k.a. Selig) as well as his wife Martha, Their daughter Hendrina, daughter-in-law Frommetje van der Hoeden and Frommetje's little daughter Martha are probably burrie d in old Jewish cemetry in Almelo (Kerhofsweg), existing from before 1775 and which was in use till about 1845. This cemetry did not yet undergo restauration. Most of the tombstones are burried under vegetation, part of them broken, and many mor e probably disappeared under present parking lot. to: Martha HEIMANS, birth 1768 Raalte, died 1 Dec 1834 Wierden, daughter of Heyman HEYMANS and Fronica EMANUELS |
