Ezechiel Meijer de Jongh, alias: Jechezkel Rintel, birth 1742 Amsterdam, Sep 1764 his age is just over 22. In 1771, when marrying, his age is stated as 30. In the book about his trial in Oostende he was born "between 1741 and 1746"., lives: , At the time of the marriage Ezechiel lived at the Fluweelen Burgwal (now Oudezijds Voorburgwal). Newspapers in 1775 show him as broker in the sales of bonds and of plantations in Suriname. In 1779 Ezechiel, makelaar (broker) and Annatje who had co
mmunity of property, living in the Jodenkerkstraat near the Amstel, appear before the Desolate Boedelkamer for having a problem paying off debts, their goods are sequestered for a short time untill an accord was accepted by the Boedelkamer and th
e creditors,, The Amsterdam Jew Ezechiel de Jonghe (born abt 1745) took residence in Oostende in 1781. Already in November 1781 he got, on his own request, citizens rights, and thus was one of the first Jews in Belgium that benefited from the "Judenreform" an
d the "Toleranzpatent" of Jozef II. On 18th October 1782, in spite of his Jewish religion he was appointed as sworn broker in colonial goods and tobacco. Ezechiel de Jonghe (married to Annaatje Pieck, 6 children) got involved in a court case abou
t forged bars of gold. He was arrested in September 1786, but was released in January 1787, for lack of evidence. (Het proces Ezechiel de Jonghe, Tatiana Seegers, unpublished dissertation, based on a large bundle of documents in the Gent Archives)
.
I found several adverts in Dutch newspapers between 1784 and 1786 showing him as a broker in Oostende (textiles, coffee, tea, tobacco), and a later one in the Times of 29 apr 1791: "At Ostend, Ready to sail for Bengal, about the 10th June. De Jongh, at Ostend, or George Whitlock, No. 29, Crutched Friars.", 19th of August 1794 I, Lieven de Jonge Borgerhoff, Public Notary residing in Vlissingen, in the name and on behalf of Mr Ezechiel de Jongh, living here, authorized representant of Mr Henry de Jongh, living in Amsterdam, according to the Procurati e on the 12th of this month, passed by the Notary Mr. Christoffel Reinard Samuel de Toelaer, .... , have gone to the office of Mr George Bell, for the de firm Canter and John Buchanan etc living in the same place, and asked him if they still ha d in their custody 65 bales of Lijwaten (cotton from India), delivered in Oostende by the ship de Ilnetteino(?), belonging to the original claimant. Also showed them as security the money orders drawn by the original claimant. To which the answe r was given: These I do not have in my possession. I, Notary, then went to the house of Mr Thomas Thompson, also living here, and asked him if he had the goods. He answered: I did not receive these yet, but I expect them from Mr Bell. The Notar y then goes on how he warned Mr Thompson, if these bales, in case he would receive them, or already had, were sent out without consent of the claimant or without him knowing ... etc etc., son of Meijer Joseph de Jonge and Eva Ezechiel Cohen Married 15 Sep 1771 Amsterdam to: Annaatje Piek, alias: Pijk, birth ± 1752 Harteveld: prob. 2) Maurice de Jongh, alias: Moshe Jechezkel Rintel, birth 17 May 1774 Amsterdam, Circumcision Moshe ben Yecheskel ben Meir Rintel 14 Sivan 5534 (24 Mei 1774), died 29 Sep 1853 Guebwiller, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France, Archives Departementales du Haut-Rhin, death certificate: Maurice de Jongh, age 79 yrs 4 months, born in Amsterdam, Holland, widower of Marie Bennett. In the early 1800's Maurice de Jongh was a merchant, chapman and shipping-agent/broker in Manchester, Liverpool, and London. He had partnerships with -amongst others- Joseph, John and James de Jongh. Towards the 1820's he got involved in the mec hanics of the spinning industry (Birch, Scholes and De Jongh), improving machinery and the dyeing process, earning several patents to his name. He then lived in Warrington. In 1833 he moved with most of his children to Lautenbach in the Alsace. Before that he was associate in a mill in Warrington and director of Sharp-Roberts and Co in Manchester, then he was invited in France by Nicolas Schlumberger in Guebwiller. http://www.fivesgroup.com/FivesCeles/EN/Profile/Pages/History.aspx 1833: Maurice DE JONGH (born in Amsterdam in 1774, Engineer at Nicolas SCHLUMBERGER in Guebwiller), buys on July 11th from Jean Friess an eight hammer mill built by par Jean Yelsch in 1829 in an old ironworks named "Obere Hammerschmied". The textile mill manufacturing woolen felt was located near the canal along the Fives Celes workshop. Maurice DE JONGH and his sons modified the mill into a mechanical equipment workshop. They designed new machineries for thread making and then manufacture themselves threads reels. In 1840 the factory employed 11 men (monthly salary from 1,4 0 to 3,00F), 48 women (monthly salary from 1,00 to 1,30F) and 17 children (monthly salary from 0,50 to 0,75F) and used 1 water mill, 2 forges, 45 looms, and 4 other mechanical equipment. 1846: The DE JONGH are authorized, by the December 22nd royal regulation, to increase the level of their hydraulic motor with the construction of a canal from the bridge between Lautenbach and Lautenbach-Zell to the workshop. This canal is toda y a key parameter of Fives Celes location as it provides the cooling water for Fives Celes high power tests. In 1863 the mill has 102 workers (28 men, 52 women and 22 children.) and on the eve of the 1870 war the company has 186 workers. 1874: The factory is bought over by the company N.SCHLUMBERGER of Guebwiller and manufactures sewing threads until 1954. With thanks to "MichelFR" on Rootschat who sent a photograph of Maurice's grave in Guebwiller, with the clear inscription "CI GIT MAURICE DE JONGH NE LE 17 MAY 1774 DECEDE LE 29 SEPT 1853. .com). Was John De Jongh a son of Ezechiel and Annaatje? So far no documents link them directly together. According to family lore (article by Willem Daniels on <http://www.levantineheritage.com/testi40.shtml> ) John, who moved from England to Smyrna in 1812 and married a Scottish woman there, was bor n in Oostende, Flanders, as a son of a Dutch father and a Scottish mother, names not known, They are thought to have moved to London in 1795. Rumour also has it that one or two generations had lived in Scotland before they moved to Oostende. In fo rum postings the author of the article once mentioned this John De Jongh had a brother Maurice, in another one a brother Joseph who ended up in South Carolina. Portraits supposedly of John De Jonghs parents on http://www.levantineheritage.com/edward.shtml Ezechiel is the only De Jongh I could find in Oostende with links to Amsterdam. He definitely lived in Oostende in 1784/5. Ezechiel had a son Jonah in 1782, who died in 1784, The next born son could very well have been a Jonah again, 15-16 month s younger than Frumat. In 1885, at the time of the trial in Oostende, Ezechiel and Annaatje had 6 children, suggesting a birth in 1885. Maurice and John de Jongh had a partnership in Liverpool (London Gazette 2 Apr 1808) and London (London Gazette Apr-Aug 1811).The name De Jongh not being common in England and certainly not in Lancashire, makes it likely they were related.. Like Joseph, a John De Jongh b 1785 was baptized as adult in Liverpool at the time. After the bankruptcy of Maurice and John in London 1811, there is no sign in England anymore of a John de Jongh. Which makes sense if he went to Smyrna. Married 1812 All Saints, Smyrna, Turkey to: Mary Wilkinson |
8) James de Jongh, birth ± 1790 Oostende? Was James De Jongh a son of Ezechiel and Annaatje? There seem to be no documents linking James (or Jacob) and Ezechiel. 1821 London Gazette, dissolved partnership: Manchester business of Twisters and Spinners Scholes, Birch & Co: Scholes Birch, Maurice De Jongh, James De Jongh, Henry Birch. JAMES leaving the partnership. Two De Jonghs in Manchester makes it likel y they were related. On 28 Aug 1826 a Dutch merchant James De Jongh arrived from Hamburg in London. He had left Harwich about a month earlier. As a reference he gave M De Jongh in Warrington (which is where Maurice lived at the time). His description: 5 Feet 6 Inch , Dark Hair, ditto Complexion, Ditto Eyes, Sharp Nose, Dark Eyebrows, Aged 36 years. His age, born 1789/90 could fit in with Ezechiels family. He would have been born in Oostende, but sadly most records there were destroyed in WWII. |
