Isaac Lyon (Isaac Ari) Goldsmid, birth 13 Jan 1778 LONDON, ENGLAND, died 27 Jan 1859 Brighton, Sussex, England, son of Asher Aron Goldsmid and Rachel Kijser Eldest son of Asher Goldsmid. Born January, 13, 1778; died January, 27, 1859. He was the first Jewish Baronet of the United Kingdom and also made Baron de Palmeira in Portugal. In 1846 he was authorized by Royal Licence to use his Portuguese honou rs in the UK. Sir Isaac Lyon was an officer of the Rose of Brazil and was invested with the Order of the Tower and Sword. He was one of the most prominent English Jews of his time and a very fortunate banker. His second daughter Rachel was marrie d to Henri Salomon d&Aelig;Avigdor. 9) Rachel Goldsmid, birth 19 Sep 1816 LONDON, ENGLAND, died 5 Nov 1896 LONDON, ENGLAND Countess of Marlburg Born September, 19, 1816; died November, 5, 1896. She was the second daughter of Sir Isaac Lyon and Isabel Goldsmid, and was privately educated by some of the most eminent teachers of the time, including Thomas campbell, the poet. In June, 1840 , she was married to Salomon Henri d&Aelig;Avigdor. Shortly after their marriage, the count and the countess went to London, where were born their three sons and one daughter. She got divorced from her husband only a few years after their marriage in 18 46. She took a deep interest in the communal institutions of the English metropolis. She was at one time president of the Ladies&Aelig; Committee of the Jews&Aelig; Deaf and Dumb Home and honorary secretary of the West End Charity. Her charitable activitie s were too numerous to mention. Both the Bayswater schools and the Jews&Aelig; Deaf and Dumb Home owed their inception pricipally to her advocacy. Instead he helped the inmates of Beth Holim Hospital in Mile End, where he was also the treasurer. He was warden of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews' synagogue, President of the Gates of Ho pe School, President of the Jews' Emigration Society and President of the Infant School amongst other roles. He was very wealthy and charitable. |
