Isidore de Aron VAZ DIAS, birth 19 Jun 1900 Amsterdam, Nederland, died 2 Jul 1942 Neuengamme, Germany, son of Aon de Mozes VAZ DIAS and Debora BRANDON BRAVO Please note: Where addresses are shown with roman numerals in brackets, ie (II), this indicates the floor number of their address. The tenement buildings were divided in floors with a familiy living on each floor. At the time of his marriage, Isidore was 20 years old and Johanna was 25 years old. Isidore was still a minor. As both his parents were deceased, Meier van Moppes, his brother in Law and husband of his eldest sister played a role in the marriage . Isidore was of Portuguese Jewish descent and Johanna of the Dutch reformed (Nederlands Hervormd) denomination. After their marriage they were registered on 4 Jan 1921 as living at Haarlemmerweg 65 (I). Soon afterwards (on 27 Jan 1921) they moved out of Amsterdam and went to The Hague (s'Gravenhage) above a cigar shop in the Kempstraat. The shop wasnot th eir own, but belonged to a man who owned many cigar shops.. Moeder helped serving the customers and Isidore decorated all the shop window displays. He was quite artistic. When they left the shop they moved to the Scheperstraat 125. Later on they moved to Bussum where they took over a a barbershop. They did not live near the shop but in the Hildegardestraat. The busines failed as the people of Bussum 'would rather walk an extra half hour to another barber then be serve d by an 'Amsterdammer'. Margaretha and Debora were born in Scheveningen, near The Hague. They were named, as was the custom, after their grandmothers. On 5 Oct 1927, the family moved back to Amsterdam (according to the family card). Isidore was then nearly 27, Johanna was 32, and the girls were 6 and 3 years old. The family moved frequently for a while. On 5 Oct 1927, they moved to Albert Cuypstraat 114 (I). Six months later (27 Mar 1928) they moved to Perlakstraat 15, which was then a brand new district in the east of Amsterdam known as the 'Indische Bu urt'. Fourteen days later (12 Apr 1928) they moved back to the AlbertCuyp-'buurt' to Daniel Stalperstraat 101, and to Van Ostadestraat 16 (I) on 20 Jul 1931. In 1932 they settled in the Indische Buurt for permenant residence; 9 Mar 1932 to Sumatrastraat 246 (II); 26 Apr 1933 to Kramatweg 94 and on 9 Nov 1936 to Preangerstraat 22 (II). When the family moved back to Amsterdam Isidore had the religious denomination of all the family members changed to none- (geen). It should be noted that the civil regstrar only changed the religion at the express request of the head of thefamily . Isidore's profession is stated as 'barbier', an old term for hairdresser or barber. The term used later was that of 'kapper', the modern term for Barber. Mum remembers that her father, Isidore, sold tobacco and smoking implements as well. Before and during the war Isidore was the president/chairman of the Allotment committee. He was much respected in his community and very active in his work. Isidore was captured on 1 July 1941 and held at the prison on the Weteringschans in Amsterdam. From there he was deported to Neuengamme via camps at Schoorl and Amersfort. He died on 2 July 1942. He reached the age of42 years. Also living at Preangerstraat 6 II was listed a Salomon Levit and Alida Levit-Scheffer. Living next door at Preangerstraat 4 II lived the family of Simon Kolper and Eva Kolper-de Vries, whilst at number 4 I lived the family of Benjamin Emden. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Isidore Vaz Dias, kapper, was getrouwd. Het echtpaar had vier kinderen. Het gezin woonde in Amsterdam. Isidore Vaz Dias deed verzetswerk voor de Communistische Partij Nederland (CPN), onder meer verspreiding van kranten en pamfletten. Communistische Partij van Nederland. Tijdens de oorlog werd vanuit deze partij veel verzet georganiseerd. Activiteiten die tot doel hadden weerstand te bieden tegen de bezetter. Vormen van verzet waren onder meer: het helpen onderduiken van mensen die vervolgd werden, het drukken en verspreiden van illegale kranten, het plegen van sabotage en alle kle ine en grote daden waarmee personen zich keerden tegen de bezettingspolitiek. In Nederland heeft een groot aantal verzetsgroepen bestaan. Enkele hiervan zijn: de Landelijke Organisatie voor Hulp aan Onderduikers (LO) en de daaraan verbonden Landelijke Knokploegen (LKP); de NV-groep, Kriterion, het Utrechts Kindercomi té, de Trouw-groep, de Ordedienst (OD), de Oranje Vrijbuiters, De Nederlandse Volksmilitie, de Westerweel-groep, de groep-Gerritsen, CS-6, de Raad van Verzet en het kunstenaarsverzet waarin Gerrit van der Veen een belangrijke rol heeft vervuld. Hij is op 1 juli 1941 opgepakt en opgesloten in de gevangenis aan de Weteringschans in Amsterdam. Vandaar is hij via de kampen Schoorl en Amersfoort naar Neuengamme op transport gesteld. Zijn echtgenote heeft de oorlog overleefd. NIOD, Erelijst Verzet en Koopvaardij, database vervaardigd door dhr J.W. de Leeuw In het Noord-Hollandse Schoorl was één van de vier Nederlandse concentratiekampen ondergebracht. De andere drie kampen waren Westerbork, Vught en Amersfoort. In Schoorl waren gedurende de bezetting voornamelijk in Nederland wonende Fransen, Engelsen en Belgen geïnterneerd. Ten tijde van de eerste grote razziaÒa€Ös zijn uit Amsterdam afkomstige joden in Schoorl bijeengebracht voordat zij naar Büchenwa ld en Mauthausen werden afgevoerd. Isidore Vaz Dias, a hairdresser was married to a non-Jewish woman. He and his wife had four children. The family lived in Amsterdam. Isidore Vaz Dias did resistance work for the Dutch communist party (CPN), including distribution of newspapers an d leaflets. He was caught on 1 July 1941 and held at the prison on the Weteringschans in Amsterdam. He was deported from there to Neuengamme via the camps at Schoorl and Amersfoort. His wife survived the war. Archief Centrale Inlichtingendienst to: Johanna Louisa Petronella JONKMAN, birth 13 Jun 1895 Rotterdam, Holland, died 4 Apr 1980, daughter of Daniel Jacobus JONKMAN and Margaretha Alberta de VRIES Johanna was a Costume / Suit Seamstress (Costuumnaaister). Johanna Jonkman applied to have her late husband, Isidore Vaz Dias (my maternal grandfather) be listed in the Honours List - 'Eerelijst der namen van hen, die voor het vaderland zijn gevallen'. It is filled out in Johanna's own handwriting and wa s successful in Isidore being listed in the Honours List. He was honoured specifically as having fallen during the war for 'being a member of the CPN and having spread newspapers and pamphlets' ('Als lid van de C.P.N. kranten en pamfletten helpen versrpeiden.') She was twice asked to include a photo with the application but she was unable to supply one. This may suggest that all photos were destroyed in case of house to house searches during the occupation which may have endangered the family. |
