Joseph Spier, birth 11 Feb 1916 Amsterdam, died 22 Sep 2009 Bergen, buried CREMATION, son of Abraham Spier and Lea Bonnettemaker As a young man, he was active in the AJC ( a socialist movement, part of the SDAP), during the thirties he was active in the financial activities of an organization which assisted German Socialists who fled Germany and for the International Brigad e fighting against Franco in Spain. In February 1941 he actively promoted the strike against the German terror and went in hiding when he received the call to be deported. He assisted escapees from Nazi Germany to obtain proper Jewish papers, smuggled children away from the Hollandsche Schouwburg, was hiding and betrayed, made a false stamp with the signature of Gemmeker the Westerbork commander and escaped from Wes terbork. After the liberation he started a printing business and lectured about the holocaust.
