The letters contain information about the attempts of Walter and Hans Steinbach to rescu e their father, Gustav Israel Steinbach, from Belzyce (apparently a reference to the ghetto of that name) near Lublin, Poland. Pg 327, footnote 33 Jewish Responses to Persecution: 1938-1940 By Alexandra Garbarini "Walter Steinbach, a German Jewish refugee living in the Netherlands, learned of his father's deportation from Stettin to Belzyce from a letter his father wrote to him, which arrived just a few short weeks laster. Upon receiving this alarming new s about his father, Walter immediately wrote to his brother, Hans, who had alos emigrated from Nazi Germany and was living in Cairo, Egypt. He copied his father's letter verbatim within the letter to his brother, as well as a not from a womam name d Erna (his father's second wife), who was in Belzyce with their father." |
