In April 1943, after hearing that Benjamin and Klaartje Benninga were in need of a hiding place, they requested the help of their son-in-law Adrianus. Klaas de Rook, a well-known music ian, brought the Jewish couple from Enschede. However, when Willie&Aelig;s parents failed to arrive at the planned location, Adrianus and Willie Meijer took the couple into hiding in their home in Hengelo instead. There, the Benningas joined Leo and Mar tha Spanier, who had been there since April 1943. Adrianus and Willie had three children, born in 1942, 1943, and 1944. The Meijers risked their lives and the lives of their children by hiding Jews, particularly as the home in which the three coup les lived was adjacent to the Lansink Hotel, which was used by German officers during the war years. Once, one of the Meijers&Aelig; neighbors was at the market and overheard people saying that the Meijers were hiding Jews. The neighbor relayed this con versation to Adrianus and Willie and warned them to be careful. During the war, Adrianus and Willie helped other people as well as the Spaniers and the Benningas by taking food coupons to Jews in hiding. They did this with the assistance of Jan Ba dart, an old school friend who worked at the distribution office. Through Jan, the Meijers also were able to receive extra coupons. The Meijers also received coupons from Klaas de Rook and food from local farmers. On September 10, 1995, Yad Vashem recognized Adrianus H. Meijer and his wife, Willie Meijer-Visser, as Righteous Among the Nations. Volgens een politielijst van eind augustus 1942 stonden de Adelaars op dit adres ingeschreven in het bevolkingsregister, maar waren zij vertrokken naar een onbekende woonplaats (ondergedoken).
