Rescue Story

Koster, Willem & Gerrigje (van Laar)
In April 1943, 43-year-old Jules Kan of Amsterdam arrived at the Kosters&Aelig; home in Deventer, Overijssel. He remained hidden with them until the end of the war. When he joined the Koster household, consisting of Willem, Gerrigje, and seven of thei r eight children, he discovered that two other Jews, four-year-old Leni Bollegraaf and her three-year-old brother, Bernard, were already hiding there, and had been since 1942. All three Jewish wards survived the war in the Kosters&Aelig; home. Althoug h Willem and Gerrigje were not wealthy, they maintained their extended household with only a nominal payment by the fugitives: Jules paid a small weekly amount towards room and food, as did Leni and Bernard&Aelig;s parents. The Kosters were a famil y of Resistance activists: two sons, Anton and Jan, were in the armed Resistance and carried out dangerous assignments. With a few other underground workers, they blew up the main railroad leading to Deventer.
On November 20, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Willem Koster and his wife, Gerrigje Koster-van Laar, as Righteous Among the Nations. to:
