E. Cohen, Geschiedenis van de familie Cohen (1932), Josephs grandfather Moses Goldsmit settled in Groningen in 1711 because he leased the bank van lening there (municipal pawnshop). His son Meijer was his business partner. Moses se en as founder of the Jewish community there. His request for a cemetery was denied though, therefore both his son Meijer and himself were buried at Muiderberg (1738 and 1730). Joseph's mother Simmetje was a daughter of Israet Levi, who was the pro genitor of the Israels family in Groningen. Joseph was born in 1728, and was secretary of the Jewish community in Groningen, 1767-1784. E. Schut, De Joodse gemeenschap in de stad Groningen 1689-1796 (1995): In 1731 the bank van lening was leased to Moses Goldsmit from Amsterdam and Jacobus Aelders (diaken reformed churh) for the period of 20 years. Their heirs could take over the contract after their deaths and could renew the contract after th e 20 years had passed. In 1732 it was stipulated that Moses or his replacement would live in the building. One room was used as synagoge. Moses' eldest son Levie was his agent. Thanks to Moses more Jewish families got permission to take up residen ce in the city. When Levie left (lived in Emden in 1735), in 1733 Izak Jozefs Cohen (later Rabbi), son in law of Moses, took over. All the time there was trouble between the leaseholders about Sunday or Saturday opening. In 1751 Joseph Meijer Goldsmit and David Arends got permission to live in Groningen and to be leaseholders besides the widow of Aelders. Joseph and David were partners in other financial matters too. Business went bad in 1763, bankrupcy followed . David Arends died in 1763, his son left in 1765, Joseph Goldsmit, who had been paying of debts with his wife's money was sued by his father in law Jonas Cohen, and died 6 Oct 1770. From 1767 onwards Joseph also was a parnas ("diaken") 1756-1657 , assesor 1767-1770. (If Joseph lived in Groningen from 1751 onwards, most of his children must have been born in Groningen).
