(following Harmen Snel in 'Joodse leerlingen op een openbare school in Amsterdam in 1823 (8)', in Misjpoge 19, 2006-2, pp. 29-37), died 31 Dec 1885 Amsterdam, occupation: teacher of languages, schoolkeeper, houseteacher of Germanic and Romanic languages. schoolkeeper; his most reknown pupil was A.C.Wertheim, of whom Ferdinand de Lesseps testified in 1883: 'qu'il cause en francais avec une purete rare et qu'il sait notre langue et la parle sans aucun accent', because of Calisch' perfect knowledg e of grammar and adoration of litterature, with which he inserted his pupils. He was as well a certified translator since 1837 and a poet. A collection of his poems was published in 1847, and he made a translation of Victor Hugo's 'Les Miserables'. He was the pushing power behind the foundation of the Jewish litterary colle ge 'Tot Nut en Beschaving' and a reknown orator. Most known as a lexicograph, he published a Dutch-French-English-German dictionary, much used in his days, and his 'Beginselen der Nederduitse Spraakkunst' (Principles of the Dutch Language) was used at almost all schools in Amsterdam. Togethe r with his cousin & br.-in-law Nathan Salomon Calisch he published in 1864 'Nieuw Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal' (new dictionary of the Dutch language) which afterwards, after adaptation by J.H.v.Dale became the 'fat' van Dale.
