To the Officer of the Court in Zutphen

From a complaint to the sheriff in Dinxperlo, December 1817

"Last Monday Levi Salomon, the son of Salomon Levi de Jong came to me with the request to register a complaint.
As he was a minor, I told him to bring his father. But the father was away so instead came his grandfather accompanied by his mother, Rebekka.
I told them about the given complaint and the mother said: " Yes, I have heard the discussion but I never interfere, as my husband is supposed to be back any day now". The grand-father told me: "that boy is a bad, un-disciplined street-boy, who even in the synagogue is making fun of Mr. Vuldauer, the Parnas and I, being the Rabbi have told him either to behave, or not to come to the synagogue.
I heard as well that Mr. Vuldauer had a discussion with this bad boy, as he called his wife a 'fat pig' and a 'thick animal'. To this I can add that L.S. de Jong told me about hooliganism, but as there is no proof, that boy cannot be charged.
I see it as my plight to inform your highness about one and the other and about the claim." Dinxperlo, June 17, 1822 "Levi Salomon de Jong was mal-treated by Jacob Gans near the public carriages on Saturday-evening the 15th of this month.
That same evening I had Jacob Gans ordered here. First of all I wanted to hear how things had happened and second to warn him to stop these actions, upon which he answered: 'I gave this guy some blows, but did he have to go and complain? When I get hit, I defend myself but I do not complain!
I know that I have to sit for this, but it is in Zutphen not so bad and there is not so much to gain here'.
So he made fun of the court even though now he has been punished"
