Levij Isaac Karpel, died ± 9 Sep 1755 Amsterdam, Impost Muiderberg Cemetery: 9 Sep 1755, Levie Karpel who died in Amsterdam, pro deo
Levi Karpel may have been related to the wife of Gerrit Jacobs in Suriname, who is mentioned in the act concerning the will of son Godschalk,

Gerrit Jacobs' Hebrew name was Naphtaly Bar Jarel a Cohen according to his will; on his gravestone in Paramaribo he is named Naftalie son of Isaac Priest Parnas (etc),, born in the region of Bsjimasjneear in the area Pelgna, died and buried on th e 24th day of the month Kislew of the year 5515, a little over 80 years old (from Dutch translation by I. Agsteribbe, 1940).
He came from Lithuania, I think Pelgna must have been Palanga, born in 1674, though the stories on the Internet (original source?) say that he came from Zager (Zagare?), traveled via Libau (Liepaja, Latvia) to Amsterdam, where he adopted the nam e Gerrit Jacobs. In 1704 he moved to Suriname. He was a shop owner in Paramaribo and he owned the plantations "Nieuw Meerzorg", "Leydenshoop" and "Jacobslust" (also known as "Jakoepoe").
He died childless and In his will, dated 21 June 1754, he left the profits of his plantations (which should not be sold) to his relatives in Lithuania and their descendants. There are also some legacies, names that are mentioned in the transcripti on by Oudeschans Dentz:
- His late wife JUDITH KERPELS, concerning prayers for her and himself,
- His present wife Haija Sadoks (daughter of his sister Ester Isaac Cohen and Zadok Simon v.Coerland-Levie and widow of Joseph Jacob van Coerland). She is not allowed to sell the 10 house-slaves, but they can be taken over by the plantation if th e executors of he will agree,
- His brother Gerson Isaac in Paramaribo,
- His cousin or nephew (dutch: neef) JOHANAN CARPELS* in Paramaribo,
- The sister of his father in law, living in Silts, Bohemen**,
- Nathanl Levy Parcelyns in Amsterdam (maybe Nathan Elieser Postelein-Levie who was married to a Rachel Isaac?),
- A foundling named Fregetje who lives in his household,
- Moses Jessurun, son of Abraham Jessurun whose godfather he was,
- JACOB, son of PHILIP JOSEPHS and JUDITH WOLLF, whose godfather he was,
- His stepson Abm Joseph (van Coerland)

* I found nothing else about him. was he a nephew or cousin of Judith?
** Aunt of Judith Kerpels? According to D.E. Cohen Levi Karpel came from Prague. Silts maybe Sulice, in the Prague district?
According to the family tree of Iwan de Vries (online) Judith Kerpels died 21 feb 1746 in Paramaribo. Married before 1704.
to:
Ester Salomon Cohen, birth 1671 Amsterdam, died ± 30 Aug 1753 Amsterdam, Muiderberg cemetery: on 29 Aw 5513 - the old wife of Levi Karfeld. In the impost-register the name is written as Karpel, buried pro deo (30 Aug 1753). 1st marriage 2nd marriage 3rd marriage, daughter of Salomon Eljakum Cohen and Egla Jacob Norden
From "De geschiedenis van de familie Cohen" by D.E. Cohen:
- Guardians of her three children (one of them named Jacob) with Hendrik: their grandfather Salomon Cohen, their uncle Marcus Levie Drukker (his wife was Hendriks sister) and the family-friend Joseph van Embden. 17 Jan 1714 Ester hands over 500 gl d to her (still minor) son from her first marriage, Jacob Hendrik, his share of his fathers inheritance. Ester was then about to marry Levi Karpel (from Prague).
- The children from her second marriage were Rachel, Abigael, Isak, Hartogh, Philip and Judith. Their share in their fathers inheritance was 1000 gld each.
Cohen writes that he didn't know anyting about the oldest four; Philip went to Suriname. Judith and her husband Jacob Hartog received her part of the inheritance from Levi Karpel and Levi Fles on 13 December 1729.
(Rachel and Abigael turn out to be children of Joseph Hartog from his earlier marriages, I don't know about Isak).
